AXLE AND DIFFERENTIAL: REAR AXLE CARRIER: REMOVAL

HINT
* Use the same procedure for the RH side and LH side.
* The procedure listed below is for the LH side.

1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL

2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL (for 2WD)

3. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT (for 4WD) Removal

4. REMOVE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY Replacement

5. REMOVE REAR DISC Disassembly

6. DISCONNECT REAR SPEED SENSOR WIRE (for 2WD) Removal

7. SEPARATE REAR SPEED SENSOR WIRE (for 2WD)

(a) Remove the bolt and separate the rear speed sensor wire.





8. REMOVE REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY (for 2WD) Removal

9. REMOVE NO. 3 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING (for 4WD) Disassembly

10. REMOVE NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING (for 4WD) Disassembly

11. REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE HOLD DOWN COMPRESSION SPRING (for 4WD) Disassembly

12. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT (for 4WD) Disassembly

13. SEPARATE NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE HOLD DOWN COMPRESSION SPRING (for 4WD) Disassembly

14. SEPARATE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER (for 4WD) Disassembly

15. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET (for 4WD) Disassembly

16. REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING (for 4WD) Disassembly

17. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER (for 4WD) Disassembly

18. REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE HOLD DOWN SPRING PIN (for 4WD) Disassembly

19. REMOVE NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE HOLD DOWN SPRING PIN (for 4WD) Disassembly

20. SEPARATE NO. 3 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY (for 4WD) Removal

21. SEPARATE REAR SPEED SENSOR (for 4WD) Removal

22. SEPARATE REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY

(a) Remove the nut, separate the rear stabilizer link assembly.





HINT
If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon wrench (5 mm) to hold the stud.

23. SEPARATE UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY

(a) Remove the nut and bolt, separate the upper control arm assembly.





HINT
Keep the nut fixed while loosening and removing the bolt.

(b) Using a brass bar and a hammer, separate the upper control arm assembly from the rear axle carrier sub assembly.





NOTICE:
Be careful not to damage the speed sensor wire.

24. SEPARATE REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY

(a) Place matchmarks on the camber adjust cam and the rear No. 1 suspension arm assembly.





(b) Remove the nut, bolt and camber adjust cam.

(c) Remove the nut and bolt, separate the rear No. 1 suspension arm assembly.





25. REMOVE REAR AXLE CARRIER SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)

(a) Remove the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.

NOTICE:
Use wire or an equivalent tool to keep the parking brake assembly from hanging down by the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly.

26. REMOVE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY (for 4WD) Removal

27. REMOVE REAR NO. 1 WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR (for 4WD) Removal

28. REMOVE REAR AXLE CARRIER SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)

(a) Remove the 4 bolts, the parking brake plate sub-assembly and the the rear axle carrier sub-assembly from the rear axle hub and bearing assembly.
