INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this bulletin is to supplement the diagnostic and repair procedure in the Repair Manual for the subject Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). Some 2018 - 2023 model year Toyota vehicles equipped with an A25A-FKS or A25A-FXS engine may exhibit a MIL ON condition with DTC P042000 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1) present. Follow the Repair Procedure in this bulletin to address this condition.

  • Software version 17.20.013 or later is required.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

  1. Using Techstream, check for stored DTCs.

    Is DTC P042000 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1) present?

    • YES  - Continue to step 2.
    • NO  - This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable Repair Manual.
  2. Are ANY other DTCs present?
    • YES  - Troubleshoot the other DTC(s) BEFORE continuing to step 3.
    • NO  - Continue to step 3.
  3. Read the freeze frame data for DTC P042000.
  4. Is the stored Long FT B1S2 1% or higher?
    G16279795
    • YES  - Continue to step 5.
    • NO  - This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable Repair Manual.
  5. Are there ANY exhaust gas leaks present?
    • YES  - This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable Repair Manual.
    • NO  - Continue to step 6.
  6. Replace the air fuel ratio sensor (sensor 2).

    Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

    • 2019 - 2022 Avalon HV:

      Engine/Hybrid Control - Engine Control -  "A25A-FXS (Engine Control): Air Fuel Ratio Sensor (for Sensor 2): Removal/Installation  "

    • 2018 - 2020 Camry:

      Engine/Hybrid Control - Engine Control  - "A25A-FKS (Engine Control): Air Fuel Ratio Sensor (for Sensor 2): Removal/Installation  "

    • 2021 - 2023 Camry:

      Engine/Hybrid Control - Engine Control  - "A25A-FKS (Engine Control): Air Fuel Ratio Sensor (for Sensor 2): Removal/Installation  "

    • 2018 - 2023 Camry HV:

      Engine/Hybrid Control - Engine Control  - "A25A-FXS (Engine Control): Air Fuel Ratio Sensor (for Sensor 2): Removal/Installation  "

    • 2020 - 2022 Highlander HV:

  7. Using Techstream, clear DTC P042000.
  8. Confirm the malfunction has been repaired successfully.
    1. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the confirmation driving pattern described in the appropriate Repair Manual.
    2. Check for ANY DTCs and confirm the condition no longer exists.
