INTRODUCTION

Some 2020 - 2024 model year Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles may exhibit a condition in which an abnormal grinding noise is coming from an outer rear view mirror assembly while folding or extending the mirrors. This condition may be present in both power and manual folding mirrors. The condition could affect right-hand and/or left-hand mirror assemblies. Follow the Repair Procedure in this bulletin to improve this condition.

APPLICABLE WARRANTY

This repair is covered under the Toyota Basic Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.
Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in this bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

Confirm the condition exists.
Does the vehicle exhibit a condition in which an abnormal grinding noise is coming from an outer rear view mirror assembly while folding or extending the mirrors?
- YES - Continue to step 2.
- NO - This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable Repair Manual.
Remove the outer mirror cover of the affected mirror assembly.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:
- 2020 - 2024 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid:
  Vehicle Exterior - Mirror (Ext) - Outer Rear View Mirror Cover - Removal
Apply grease to the pivot area as shown.
NOTE:
- Ensure grease is white lithium grease or equivalent.
- Equivalent grease should consist of low temperature grease that can operate at -30°C.
- Grease should consist of mineral oil or mineral oil plus synthetic oil.
Confirm the condition no longer exists.
Does the vehicle exhibit abnormal grinding noise from an outer rear view mirror assembly while folding or extending the mirrors?
- YES - Repeat step 3.
- NO - Continue step 5.
Reinstall the outer mirror cover of the affected mirror assembly.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:
- 2020 - 2024 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid:
  Vehicle Exterior - Mirror (Ext) - Outer Rear View Mirror Cover - Installation
Repeat steps 2 - 5 on the opposite mirror assembly if needed.
Confirm correct mirror operation.
